It’s one thing to feel it in your home and another entirely to see buildings swaying with the force of the earth-shaking motion. Earthquakes are also unpredictable, meaning that they do not come with a warning or chance for immediate preparation.

Last night (Tuesday, September 19), a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Mexico City leaving thousands of residents fleeing into the streets for safety. Although no fatalities have been reported thus far, some deaths were reported around the border area between Mexico State and Puebla . According to Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera, at least 50 people have been injured within Mexico City itself . If you are unfamiliar with the area, Mexico City is the most populous city in North America with approximately 21 million residents. It stretches over 650 square miles of land and was built on top of the ancient Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan.

Many people were surprised by how strong of an earthquake this actually was because there was no forewarning that it would occur . This means that people did not have a chance to prepare themselves before the shaking began around 1:14am according to witnesses. Earthquake alarms can be heard throughout videos posted online in order to warn people about the tremors so they are able to take cover in nearby buildings or in open spaces.

Although no fatalities have been reported, some injuries have resulted from falling debris during the shakeup. Some of these injuries have occurred in the form of slivers, or being hit by flying objects. One person was reported to have died because of a heart attack during the quake, however it is unclear whether she died because of the Earthquake itself or if it was caused by fear .

Many are now wondering what this means for Mexico City as far as future earthquakes are concerned. Although Earthquake alarms are helpful , they do not ensure safety unless people know how to react properly when an Earthquake occurs. Some residents describe feeling significantly shaken after experiencing such a strong Earthquake so close to home . The Earthquake has caused significant damage to various buildings around Mexico City including storefronts, cracked sidewalks and even collapsed homes. Fortunately enough, no major damage or injuries were reported at Mexico’s Earthquake Warning Center. Earthquake alarms began to sound at about 1:14am and they continued throughout the duration of the Earthquake . Some videos depict people fleeing into open areas when Earthquake alarms could be heard in the background. Many residents are afraid that this Earthquake may cause more damage in nearby cities because it was felt for such a significant period of time. Since no Earthquake warnings were issued prior to this Earthquake, many worry that this may become an even larger issue in the future.

The earthquake also caused damage in Puebla, Morelos, Mexico State, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Veracruz. The epicenter was near Tres Picos , Mexico with an approximate depth of 51 miles (82 kilometers). According to reports from local news outlets, the Earthquake was even felt in some areas of Guatemala . The Earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale , which is considered to be a significant Earthquake that can cause heavy damage if it’s strong enough. Some people were able to make emergency calls using their cell phones while others posted videos online of buildings swaying back and forth during the Earthquake.

What this means for Mexico City residents :

– Earthquake alarms are helpful but they do not ensure safety unless you know how to properly react during an Earthquake.

– Earthquakes are unpredictable meaning that there is no warning prior to one occurring so it is extremely important to stay alert at all times.
